Since its founding eighty years ago, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has been obsessed with the color red - a symbol of its political identity. As the "vanguard of the proletarian class," the CCP claimed that its mission was to eliminate capitalist exploitation. This is understandable because the CCP was originally an organization of poor peasants, workers and soldiers of the Red army. After seizing national power in 1949, Mao continually warned that the Party should never "change its color."
