The US will do want it takes to be less dependent on other nations. And if this action impedes China then it is because China is too dependent on the USA, and that is China’s fault.
Trade and multilateralism is NOT a god given right, and must be a low priority option if a nation wants to remain strong. North America does not need anyone else to have a good future. And also understand that North America does not owe anyone else anything. Get used to it.
Rejecting international trade only works if a country has all the mineral resources it needs. The U.S. doesn’t. Therefore, the U.S. will have to continue trade with some countries, and the more the U.S. acts like a hostile trading partner, the more costly those mineral resources are likely to be for U.S. companies that need them.
We are not suggesting a total rejection of offshore trade but only if it is necessary and not duplicitous and it certainly needs to be rebalanced.
It is also worth reviewing what we can make mine grow or fish for ourselves for reasons of local prosperity and security. When studied you may find that this may be most of what we need.
Long Supply chains are wasteful and build inventory and delays and reduce overall sustainability.
Globalization of trade has increased 8 times since 1980 but global wealth has hardly increased 3 times and prosperity is flat or worse in many western nations. So global trade has been a poor generator of wealth but very good at transferring it.
Get used to the idea that all boats have NOT all risen together.
