Escape from Moscow

A number of European countries previously under Russian domination are now making a concerted push to launch meaningful political and economic reforms, and to resolve conflicts with breakaway regions. Both developments have irked Russia, and greater support from the EU is needed if they are to succeed.

Communism’s fall gave the nations of the former Soviet bloc a chance to turn towards democracy, a market economy, and the rule of law. Some countries cut ties decisively with the communist past; others were less successful, a few failed catastrophically.
