Latin America’s Beleaguered Democracies
Relatively new left-of-center governments in Brazil, Chile, and Colombia have struggled to execute their progressive agendas. Such challenges, coupled with other troubling political developments in neighboring countries, suggest that challenges to democratic governance in the region will intensify.
NEW YORK – Threats to democracy in Latin America are nothing new. The emergence of authoritarian populism in the region has eroded democratic norms and institutions, and illiberal politicians seeking to bolster their power have only hastened their decline.
